'Tis the Season to be Baking
Christmas Reflections and Bread
Recipes
Father Dominic Garramone, O.S.B.,
acclaimed author and host of PBS TV show "Breaking Bread with Father
Dominic", weaves together holiday reflections and recipes in ‘Tis the Season
to Be Baking. In this new collection, Father Dominic relates nearly
two-dozen holiday baking traditions to scripture and shows that holiday
preparations can seem less like drudgery if we can see the purpose behind
them. Did you know that the French meal fougasse represents the genealogy of
Jesus or that two very different Christmas breads—the traditional German
stollen and the more recent Saint Bede tradition of “Bambino
Bread”—represent the Christ Child in swaddling cloths? ‘Tis the Season to
Be Baking offers such wisdom and it takes bakers, holiday
traditionalists, and Father Dominic fans beyond bread yet again.

The
Nativity Story: Contemplating Mary’s Journeys of
Faith
Compiling Editor: Rose
Pacatte, FSP
Although
she is the Mother of God, Mary was a woman who experienced the full range of
human emotions: amazement and confusion, fear and exhaustion, tenderness and
wonder, tranquility and joy. In this inspiring book, contemporary women
ponder Mary’s journeys—both spiritual and physical—and contemplate her
growth as a person, a woman, a wife, a mother, a child of God.
Each of
these authors has made a journey of faith that has been enriched or guided
by Mary’s example, and they show us how—through our roles and women and men,
daughters and sons, wives and husbands, mothers and fathers, sisters and
brothers, professionals and religious—we can find in Mary both a role model
and source of insight and encouragement for our own “journeys of faith.”
Includes photos from the movie.

The First Christmas
Tree and Other Stories
For over one hundred years, the writings of Henry Van
Dyke have been lovingly passed down from generation to generation. His
Christmas stories, especially, are as resonant today as when the
Presbyterian minister first read them to his New York City congregation
in the late 1890s.
In this volume of Christmas stories and prayers, we read of courage,
generosity, and the triumph of light over darkness—from The First
Christmas Tree, a magical tale of the Thunder Oak and the false god
Thor, to the lyrical story of The Christmas Angel in the Country Beyond
the Stars.
Destined to become a Christmas classic for the whole family, The
First Christmas Tree and Other Stories will inspire us all, in the
words of Henry Van Dyke, "to live Christmas—not just Christmas
day." (Item #83257) $15.95 |

Like
Winter Waiting
by John Foley, S.J.
Like Winter Waiting is a thought-provoking musical play that
tells the Advent story with humor, poignancy and joy. It celebrates
the anticipation of Christmas the way an expectant mother joyously
awaits the birth of her child — the waiting is a sacred time of
reflection, preparation and hope.
Present the play as a choral
concert with some spoken parts or as a complete musical play with
characters, costumes, a minimal set and even dance. The choral
arrangements are accessible to most parishes and can be conveniently
rehearsed using the cassette or CD with voice lead-ins. The audience
participates by singing the recurring theme song printed in the
assembly edition.

Advent and
Christmas Wisdom from St. Thomas Aquinas
The holy
seasons of Advent and Christmas are a time to reflect on God's infinite love
for us all and how through the birth of his son, Jesus Christ, Christianity
was born. Advent and Christmas Wisdom from St. Thomas of Aquinas
guides readers on their spiritual journey to be closer to God and understand
how to live the life of a Christian.
Offering daily selections from St. Thomas of Aquinas for meditation and
prayer, this book is a wonderful way to examine your faith and feelings
during Advent and Christmas. The words of this revered saint help focus the
reader's reflections on the wonder of creation. These daily Scripture
readings and meditations offer a better understanding of St. Thomas'
passionate beliefs on the importance of our relationship with God. Through
the din of advertisements and gift-buying at Christmas time, we are reminded
of his thoughts on virtue and the importance of charity and how it is the
essence of our Christian life. These daily affirmations also offer a simple
Advent action that you can do to keep the prayers and thoughts of St. Thomas
with you all day.
Advent and Christmas are a time to prepare for and celebrate the birth of
Jesus Christ. Use these reflections and meditations of St. Thomas Aquinas to
slow down and remember that because of God' infinite love for us all, Jesus

Advent and
Christmas Wisdom from St. Francis of Assisi
It's easy to get lost in
the bustle of Christmas shopping and holiday parties, losing sight of God.
Advent and Christmas Wisdom from St. Francis of Assisi gives readers
a momentary cease in the chaos, allowing daily meditation. It is essential
in today's postmodern culture to remember the true purpose of Advent--the
preparation for and celebration of the coming of Jesus.
Each day's selection offers a new insight from one of the most beloved
saints, St. Francis of Assisi. St. Francis serves as an appropriate model of
virtue during the time of year when it is easy to become caught up in the
materialized aspects of the holiday. Through his words, we are reminded of
the simplicity in poverty, the reverence of God's word, of showing
gratitude, and practicing forgiveness. Along with the words of St. Francis
are daily Scripture readings and prayers that mirror his philosophy. After
reflecting, readers will find an Advent action--something simple they can do
to keep the words and prayers alive with them throughout the day.
Christians looking for a way to energize their holiday practices will
cherish this guide to refocusing on the true "reason for the season," the
birth of Christ.

The Miracle of Saint
Nicholas
It was the day before Christmas in a small Russian
village. Alexi's babushka was telling him what Christmas was like
when she was a girl - before the soldiers came. "Our church was
as crowded as a pod full of peas. Candles made the church as bright
as the sunniest day. Watching over us was the blessed icon of St.
Nicholas." Alexi had many questions, including, "Why can't
we celebrate Christmas tomorrow in St. Nicholas?" Babushka
sadly replied that it would take a miracle after sixty years. Well,
Alexi had heard enough. If there truly was such a thing as a
miracle, why couldn't one happen here? And so unfolds a story which
poignantly reveals how, though quiet and hidden, faith and hope can
not be suppressed - by soldiers or by time. Beautifully illustrated
with original four-color paintings on every page. A perfect
Christmas present. Hardcover. 32 pages. (Item #81304) $14.95

Wonderworker: The True
Story of How St. Nicholas Became Santa Claus
by Vincent A. Yzermans
Discover the magic inherent in the true story of a man who
overcame relative obscurity in a small Mediterranean city and became a
cultural icon the world over. In Wonderworker: The True Story of How St.
Nicholas Became Santa Claus, Msgr. Vincent Yzermans writes a book for his
grandnephew that explains the evolution of St. Nicholas into Santa Claus.
Nicholas quickly made a name for himself with his eloquence, intelligence
and generosity. Recognized as a miracle worker during his lifetime, he
became known for helping children in need, mothers in labor, and sailors
as they traversed the Mediterranean. The modern incarnation of Santa
Claus, however, became popularized in the mid-19th century through a poem
by Clement Clark Moore called "A Visit from St. Nicholas"-better
known as "The Night Before Christmas"-in the Frank Church
editorial, "Yes, Virginia, There Is a Santa Claus," and in the
artwork of Thomas Nast and Haddon Sundblom.
This book will appeal to children from the age of nine to ninety-nine.
Anyone who celebrates Christmas-regardless of whether or not they still
believe in the existence of a Santa Claus who brings gifts to children
around the world-will welcome this informative and eloquent explanation of
the true story behind how a humble bishop from Asia became "jolly old
St. Nick." 64 pages. Paperback (Item

The Very First
Christmas
Many children's Christmas books are long on fancy and short
on fact. Most of them ignore the themes of the first Christmas and opt
instead for fairy tale settings or winter tableaus. This
beautifully illustrated book, a Gold Medallion Book Award winner, fills
the gap by presenting fresh insights into the Christmas story from both
the scriptural and secular context.
The book tells the story of a young boy
Christopher, who no longer wants to hear fairytales; he only wants real
bedtime stories. So his mother tells the amazing and miraculous story of
Jesus' birth. Along the way, Christopher learns the answers to some
challenging questions about the Christmas story. And all the answers are
right from the Bible.
This book makes a wonderful gift
for children, families, and friends. 32 pages. (Item #80317) $15.49 |

A Tree for Christmas
A lovely focal point, today's Christmas tree is a reminder
of Jesus' birth. It recalls the night the Savior was born, the night Jesus
came to earth to live and to ultimately die for us.
From the moment He was born and
placed in a worn wooden manger for a cradle, to the day He surrendered His
life on a wooden cross, an arboreal theme followed Jesus throughout His
time on earth. This lyrical Christmas book reminds us how often Jesus was
touched by this theme and how, in the end, we really needed a tree for
Christmas. 32 pages. (Item #83986) $12.99

Saint Nicholas: The
Real Story of the Christmas Legend
Many parents and teachers struggle with how to approach the
Saint Nicholas/Santa Claus dilemma. Many deal with this by telling
children that the legends surrounding Santa Claus are based on a real,
historical figure named Nicholas, a Christian bishop known for his
generosity.
This picture book presents a shortened,
somewhat fictionalized version of the life of Saint Nicholas, explaining
that Nicholas was a servant of God and that, through him, God’s love was
reflected to others. The story touches on the ministry of Nicholas and his
generous gift of a dowry to three young girls as a response to God's love
in Jesus. And it brings application to our own lives as we, too, respond
with grateful hearts to God’s great gift of love to us.
Combining museum-quality artwork
and family friendly language, this book clearly articulates how God
showered His love upon us through Christ and helps children see that our
own gift-giving is a grateful response to the sacrificial gift of God’s
Son. 32 pages. (Item #88116) $13.49 |

The Christmas Quilt
A Novel
A book of love, hope, and
warmth, The Christmas Quilt is about home, about roots, and about
"one small snowflake following another, settling on the ground soft like
a kiss from heaven, covering Smoky Hollow like a blanket of grace that
shines white with goodness."
Reminiscent of Lee
Smith's Oral History or of Cold Sassy Tree by Olive Ann
Burns for its intimate portrayal of mountain life in an earlier day,
The Christmas Quilt is a compelling and tender account of seven
months in the lives of the members of a family in the mountains of north
Georgia. It will endear you not only to its storyline, but to the
pictures it paints of Sunday dinners, of picking blackberries, of
running train tracks, of a revival meeting, and of Granny creating a
quilt for her long-absent son. Paperback. (Item #88160) $12.99

Build Your Own
Bethlehem: A Nativity Scene and Activity Book for Christmastime
by Gertrud Mueller Nelson with Peter Mazar
Here are all the characters—and then some—for
building your own nativity scene! Each figure is yours to pop loose and
set up as the days of Christmas unfold. There’s the Holy Family of
Jesus, Mary and Joseph. There’s the stable with scampering mice and
cooing doves that sit in the rafters. There’s the ox and ass and a flock
of sheep accompanied by shepherds and their faithful dog. There’s an
angel, of course, and a star. Epiphany’s three holy kings, Caspar,
Melchior and Balthasar, are here too. And there are surprises—the
gospel’s “senior citizens,” Anna and Simeon, who wait 40 days to
meet their newborn Lord.
This beautiful,
full-color activity book (the pop-out figures are found inside) suggests
eight occasions, from Christmas until Candlemas—a full 40 days—for
using the figures to tell a portion of the nativity gospels, like a puppet
theater! The art of Gertrud Mueller Nelson and the sturdy pop-out figures
truly bring the Christmas stories to life.
Building your own
Bethlehem is a wonderful way to keep the spirit of Christmas alive well
into the new year—perfect for home or classroom, perfect for every age.
Celebrate these
Advent and Christmas stories at home or in the classroom:
• The annunciation to Mary
• The birth of Jesus
• The coming of the shepherds
• The flight into Egypt
• The visit of the Magi
• And more!
8 1/2 X 11, 40 pages. (Item #87693) $15.00
